As the 14th Pictoplasma Conference and Festival nears, we are left with exactly 3 weeks for things to snap into place. But miraculously, once more, they do—so here are a few items we can safely check off our list:
FULL LINE UP OF 21 CONFERENCE SPEAKERS CONFIRMED:
From everyone’s favorite ‘Disney of the 3DS’ Kéké Flipnote, to award winning Aardman director Darren Dubicki, from picture book maker Rilla Alexander to monument valley level designer Danette Beatty: the 2018 Pictoplasma Conference speakers line up has by now grown out of all proportion, with a total of 21 superb international artists taking the stage to present their unique approach to character creation at its most emotive. |

But that’s not all: the CHARACTER LAB at nearby ACUD awaits all conference attendees and speakers with workshops, immersive media presentations, performance evenings and happy mingling. One highlight might be the ‘Open Mic Night of Epic Character Fails,’ offering the conference crowd a stage, mic, and a drink, to share all those private stories of creative procrastination, bad design choices, project fuck-ups and jobs gone horribly wrong. Our guess: Someone in the audience most likely has the remedy to cure the hurt. Maybe you end up being in possession of the missing piece for someone else to solve their puzzle, or maybe you’ll find solace where you’ve least expected it?

OFFICIAL 2018 ANIMATION PROGRAM ANNOUNCED:
The animation selection has gone online, and it feels safe to say that our big screen has rarely been illuminated by such a plethora of bewildering greatness, with many of the international studios and filmmakers present for Q&A rounds after each screening! Julian Glander premieres ‘Skybaby,’ a pastel-colored animated adaptation of his ongoing webcomic; current animation shooting star and CGI puppeteer Nikita Diakur sends the audience on a broken simulated journey in ‘Ugly;’ and Niki Lindroth von Bahr’s award winning ‘The Burden’ deals with the existential anxiety of its animal protagonists in an hilariously dark musical enactment of the modern market place. Of course, the festival’s famously and fabulously trippy Psychedelic Midnight Mix on Friday is set to bend brains and undermine established rules of storytelling, with exquisitely animated question marks by the likes of Brenda Lien, Ori Toor, Wong Ping and David Lewandowski.

17 CHARACTER WALK EXHIBITIONS AND GROUP SHOWS SECURED:
The Character Walk, a tour of ‘far too many’ Berlin art spaces, leads through 17 exhibitions and group shows featuring paintings, sculptures, and multimedia installations by more than 100 artists. This is your chance to get up close and personal with original drawings and animation stills by Tove Jansson’s legendary Moomins, brand new paintings by Chilean artist Victor Castillo, and minimalist ceramics with maximal appeal by upcoming illustration star Charlotte Mei. Current Internet phenomenon Alex ‘Oh No’ Norris invites visitors to enter his highly viral three panel webcomics as a spatial experience, while the famed political activist and ‘Illustrator-in-Chief,’ Edel Rodriguez awaits visitors for his first ever exhibition in Germany.
